What’s it worth ?

Please note – the Society itself does not purchase or sell stamps, covers, etc. nor do we provide valuations – for this you may care to visit one of the local stamp fairs, held at Barton and Bilsborrow village halls, details of which are on Local Stamp Fairs tab. Participating stamp dealers here may be able to help with these requests – generally the dealer will need to see the collections of stamps to give an advice.

 To help:

  •  Stamps torn off letters over the years and thrown into a shoebox have little commercial value. However if the stamps are still on the envelopes, there just might be some value.
  •  British and Worldwide First Day Covers (FDC’s) from the 1970's, 80's and 90's with hand written addresses are generally not of interest, unaddressed might be, depending on collector/dealer (only worth 10p-50p each unless from about 2015 onwards).
  •  "School Boy" collections – a kind of collection started by a child, containing odd random stamps off the mail and packets of 100 different, usually are of low value.
  • Complete sets of stamps of all countries, Great Britain and British Commonwealth in an album(s), mint (unused) or nicely used stamps, booklets of stamps and similar - might have some value, depending on collector/dealer.

If you find the value of your collection is low and not worth the effort of taking it to an auction house and would like to donate it to the Society, someone from The City of Preston Philatelic Society could arrange to collect, for the purpose of selling internally to stamp collecting members and donating all funds to the Society.

Please leave a name, e-mail address/contact telephone number and are you live and someone from the Society will make a contact.

The Emergence of the Balkan States

 Paul Walton, November 28th

The emergence of the Balkan states is a fascinating and complex part of history. The Balkan Peninsula, located in Southeastern Europe, has a rich and turbulent history that has significantly shaped its modern identity.

Very well organised collection with avalanche of dates and governors for the every period of change.

Competition Evening October 17th 2024

Roger Blackburn Cup - 6 pages of any topic

Presidents Trophy - 1 page letter M

Nice evening again with a good number of displays on various subjects - you probably knew the Mallard is a wild duck but what about Mallard the Locomotive? Have you seen the South Africa Stamps dedicated to the Gold Mine from 1930's to 1948? Or Western Europe stamps, picturing 22 different Monarchs of the XIX century - all on one page?

The list goes on of the things, discovered that night also the Trophies have been awarded.
